Supervision is complex, and the purpose of this session is to provide behavioral guidance to navigate and manage an array of professional issues that may occur in clinical supervision. In this 3-hour training, we will provide an introduction and overview of the foundation of clinical supervision. Intended for new clinical supervisors, the focus will be on translating knowledge to practice. Topics covered will include an overview of (a) role and responsibilities of a clinical supervisor, (b) skills in providing effective oversight of and guidance to supervisees who diagnose, create treatment plans, and treat clients, (c) supervisory methods and techniques, and (d) fair and accurate evaluation of a supervisee’s ability to plan and implement clinical assessment and treatment.

Adding complexity and depth to the introductory course, advanced clinical supervision focuses on the advanced techniques, special circumstances, cultural competency in supervision and the ethics of self-care in supervision. In this session, we will explore topics of supervision more in depth.. Intended for new and experienced clinical supervisors, the focus will be on translating knowledge to practice. Topics covered will include (a) assessing your supervision style and techniques (b) effective evaluation of supervisee skills and professional development (c) research on cultural competency in supervision (d) ethical considerations in supervision focusing on self-care.

Supervisors are responsible for teaching supervisees how to address issues of diversity within the counseling relationship, and how to address their biases and triggers in order to provide culturally sensitive counseling. Culturally responsive supervision includes mentoring, guiding, supporting, and facilitating learning culturally specific issues within supervisory process (Fukuyama, 1994).
