In Crisis or Numbed Out: Understanding and Conceptualizing Firefighters

This webinar will cover fundamental cultural competencies of working with the fire and EMS population. Material will include understanding the general fire and EMS profession and cover shift work, health issues, repetitive traumatic exposure, common relational patterns in and out of a fire station, chain of command careers and the 911 system. Clinical material will cover recent research on fire fighter suicide, usage of EAP systems, common clinical diagnostics and lastly popular modalities and available resources promoted within major metropolitan fire departments. Participants will be given a loose model to take into consideration valuable cultural context while maintaining fidelity to evidence based clinical models. 


  • Review basic fire and EMS work including call volume and call types.
  • Understand the development of cultural traditions in Fire and EMS and how such traditions relate to possible symptomology. 
  • Explore trends in treatment and best practice for the Fire and EMS population.

Alana Brunacini is an Arizona LPC running a private practice and consulting business. She holds masters degrees in clinical psychology and mental health counseling as well a a doctorate in behavioral health. She has been working in the mental health field since 2006 with significant experience in fire and EMS, substance abuse, crisis work and corrections. She has taught for the community colleges and teaches various behavioral health topics to fire and EMS departments across the country. She also participated in the CALFire behavioral health curriculum development cadre in 2019/2020.
